Directions: Your team will design a poster on a major volcanic eruption. See assignment list below. Include the following in your poster:
1. Volcano name and date of eruption (already provided below in your assignments)
2. Location of volcano (City, Country and latitude and longitude)
3. Type of volcano (i.e. composite/strato-volcano, composite cone, cinder cone, or dome)?
4. What type of convergent (e.g. oceanic-oceanic, oceanic-continental, or continental-continental) plate tectonic boundary formed this volcano?
5. Approximate number of casualties from this eruption.
6. Describe in detail how the eruption caused so many casualties. For example, was the major issue starvation, tsunamis, pyroclastic flows, pyroclastic surges, mudflows, landslides, etc. Go into detail about what occurred.
7. Draw a picture that illustrates step #6.
8. Current state of volcano. Is it still active? If so, when do scientist predict it will erupt again? Is it a crater, caldera, or still cone shaped?
9. Briefly describe it's eruption history before and/or after the eruption.
10. Include three other interesting facts about the volcano and/or eruption.
11. Include Volcanic Explositivity Index (VEI) number of the eruption!
Volcanic Eruption Assignments:
Team 1: Tambora 1815
Team 2: Krakatau 1883
Team 3: Mont Pelee 1902
Team 4: Nevado del Ruiz 1985
Team 5: Unzen 1792
Team 6: Laki 1783
Team 7: Vesuvius 1631
Team 8: Mt. Pinatubo 1991
Team 9: Mount St. Helens 1980
