Volcano Project:
Step 1: Read the Volcano Introduction Article (Click here) and answer the questi0ns below.
A) What is Volcanism?
B) Look at figure 5-16. Describe the anatomy of a volcano. Use the terms crater, vent, magma, and lava in your description.
C) What is considered a volcano?
D) What is the difference between lava and magma?
E) What is the difference between a caldera and crater?
F) What is the difference between a volcano and a vent?
G) What is the difference between a mountain and volcanic cone?
H) What is the difference between a quiet and explosive eruption?
I) What are the three types of volcanoes?
J) How are shield volcanoes unique?
K) How are cinder volcanoes unique?
L) How are composite volcanoes unique?
Step 2: Watch the video and read the article on this page (click here) to answer the questions below. The video will stop halfway. At this point you'll have to read the article to obtain the remaining answers.
A) Define volcanic hazard?
B) What are some examples of volcanic hazards?
C) What are the characteristics of lava flow?
D) What are the characteristics of pyroclastic flow?
E) What are the characteristics of pyroclastic surges?
F) What is the best way to prevent loss of life from a pyroclastic flow or surge?
Step 3: On a piece of paper design a poster on a major volcanic eruption. See breakout room assignment list below. You can work with the group to answer the questions, but each of you need to create your own poster. Include the information below in your poster and use the Major Explosion Article (click here) to help you gather the information. Take a picture of your work, be sure name (first and last) is displayed in top right corner. Upload picture in correct place in performance task.
Volcanic Eruption Assignments:
Breakout Room 1: Tambora 1815
Breakout Room 2: Krakatau 1883
Breakout Room 3: Mont Pelee 1902
Breakout Room 4: Nevado del Ruiz 1985
Breakout Room 5: Unzen 1792
Breakout Room 6: Laki 1783
Breakout Room 7: Vesuvius 1631
Breakout Room 8: Mt. Pinatubo 1991
Breakout Room 9: Mount St. Helens 1980
Absent Students: Complete project on your own. See below to determine your assigned major explosion depending on the first letter of your last name. For instance, since my last name starts with a "W" I would complete my poster on Mt. Pinatubo 1991.

- Volcano name and date of eruption (already provided below in your assignments)
- Location of volcano (City, Country and latitude and longitude)
- Type of volcano (i.e. composite/strato-volcano, composite cone, cinder cone, or dome)?
- What type of convergent (e.g. oceanic-oceanic, oceanic-continental, or continental-continental) plate tectonic boundary formed this volcano?
- Approximate number of casualties from this eruption.
- Describe in detail how the eruption caused so many casualties. For example, was the major issue starvation, tsunamis, pyroclastic flows, pyroclastic surges, mudflows, landslides, etc. Go into detail about what occurred.
- Draw a picture that illustrates the previous bullet.
- Current state of volcano. Is it still active? If so, when do scientist predict it will erupt again? Is it a crater, caldera, or still cone shaped?
- Briefly describe it's eruption history before and/or after the eruption.
- Include three other interesting facts about the volcano and/or eruption.
- Include Volcanic Explositivity Index (VEI) number of the eruption!
