Updated Message, please read everything below!!!
Hi Marine Science Students,
Graded Instruction Begins: On April 27th, the enrichment period ends and graded instruction begins. All assignments during the enrichment period were optional and there were no penalties for not doing them. Starting on April 27th, I will have weekly lessons posted by 10:00 am each Monday until the end of the school year. Read below for more details on the weekly lessons, how to turn in late work, and how to improve overall grade.
Graded Weekly Lessons: The weekly lessons start with a check in survey, followed by reading articles and watching videos while completing a worksheet and taking an end of lesson test. I will not be having Zoom or other online meetings as part of distance learning. My hope is that the assignments are understandable, straightforward, and consistent and students are able to complete within the given amount of time. The check in survey is due the following Friday at 10:00am, while both the worksheet and test are due the following Sunday at 11:59pm. Work at your own pace and feel welcome to submit earlier than the deadline. If you have any questions about the lessons, please email me at [email protected]. The following is a break down of the topics that will be covered each week:
4/27/20 - 5/1/20: Marine Prokaryotes, Protists, Fungi, and Plants
5/4/20 - 5/8/20: Marine Animals without a Backbone
5/11/20 - 5/15/20: Marine Fishes
5/18/20 - 5/22/20: Marine Reptiles, Birds, and Mammals
5/25/20 - 5/29/20: Marine Ecosystems
6/1/20 - 6/5/20: Senior Grades Due (No Work This Week)
Weekly Lesson Directions: Go to the "schedule" tab on this site each Monday at 10:00 am to for assignment instructions.
Grading Policy: Per district policy, Semester II (SII) final grades must be equal to or greater than what you ended with before April 27th, which is Progress Period 4 (P4). For the rest of the school year teachers are to grade as normal. So if a student receives a low score or doesn't turn something in, his/her grade will drop during the SII grading period. Whatever grade is higher (i.e. P4 vs. SII grade), is the student's final semester grade. One example is if a student ended with a 75% on April 27th and raised his/her grade to a 95% over the next six weeks of school. In this case, he/she would end the semester with an A letter grade. Another example is if a student started with a 75% and dropped to a 50%. In this case the student would end with a C letter grade, not an F.
Weekly Lessons Grading Rubric: Tests are 1 point per question and can only be taken once. The number of questions on each week's test will vary. Weekly check in surveys are 10 points for completing by the deadline (Fridays at 10:00 am) or zero points anytime after the deadline. As for worksheets, they must be 100% complete to receive full credit by the deadline or are 30% off. My requirement is that each response is well thought out and written in complete sentences. I will use the rubric below when grading the worksheets. Each section of the worksheet will either be homework or project points and is specified in the document.
Homework Points:
100% Complete = 100 Points
90-99% Complete = 90 Points
80-89% Complete = 80 Points
70-79% Complete = 70 Points
60-69% Complete = 60 Points
50-59% Complete = 50 Points
Less than 49% Complete = 0 Points
Project Points:
100% Complete = 10 Points
90-99% Complete = 9 Points
80-89% Complete = 8 Points
70-79% Complete = 7 Points
60-69% Complete = 6 Points
50-59% Complete = 5 Points
Less than 49% Complete = 0 Points
How to Improve Grade: You have two options to improve your grade. One option is to complete all late work (see below for late work still accepted) that was in grade book prior to April 27th. Another option is to complete the six weekly lessons. No additional items will be offered for extra credit. Even if you are starting with a very low grade, you should have a passing semester grade in six weeks if you follow these steps and do well on tests.
Late Work (Work Prior to March 13th): The only late work I am accepting at this point are the Marine Bio Intro Packet and Test. If you have a zero on anything else, it will remain a zero in grade book. Submit the packet and test by Sunday 5/10/20 @ 11:59PM or the items will remain a permanent zero in grade book. I will update grade book with scores for these items after 5/10/20, not before.
Marine Bio Intro Packet
I have two options for turning in the packet. Option 1: I do not have any documents in the packet to send you via mail/email, so the only credit you'll get are on the items you already have with you. Click here for the packet list. To submit the packet, scan your packet items (in order) into a single pdf, then upload the document under the Marine Biology Intro Packet link on Google Classroom. See below for google classroom codes. You can either scan your document with a computer scanner or download a pdf app on your smartphone. Genius scan is one example of a scanner. I just downloaded this app on my iphone. I believe it was free and really easy to use. I will not accept emailed packets or individual photos of your entire packet. Option 2: If you're missing most packet items, I created an alternative assignment for you to do in its place. You will read two articles (Some Basics of Biology and Introduction to Marine Ecology) while completing the Marine Bio Intro Alternate Worksheet. The articles and worksheet are posted under the Marine Bio Intro Alternative Packet assignment link in Google Classroom. Open the worksheet document on google classroom and type in your responses as you read through the articles. Submit when finished. Do not email me the scanned packet or the alternative google doc.
Google Classroom Codes:
Period 1 = kugmmbz
Period 2 = ad6y7yg
Period 4 = hpksyig
Marine Bio Intro Test:
To take the test, go to the "test" tab to locate the exam. Download the test document and submit your responses electronically with the answer key link provided.
Student Survey: I may need to contact you directly. In this case, please complete this student contact survey if you haven't already done so: Marine Science Survey
Thank you,
Mrs. Wilson
